Marco Island, Ft. Myers & Boca Grande

Capt. Scott Hughes
June 4, 2007
Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

Lots of wind, lots of tarpon

So Far this season has had a lot of wind and a lot of tarpon. We had 13 days in a row of east wind at 10-20 knots last month and we got beat up on many of our trips but other that the fishing has been solid. We're off a little on the total number of hook-ups but I've been able to put a few tarpon in the air on every trip since my last report. We also had tropical storm Barry come though last weekend and we had to cancel a few of our trips. That storm pushed out the majority of the tarpon because of dirty water but even with that we still managed three this morning and two this afternoon. Almost all of my tarpon fishing has been sight fishing with crabs.

I usually don't do anything other than tarpon fishing for the month of June but after the storm I had to do a little flats fishing to get something gpoing under adverse conditions. I went out blind on my afternoon trip yesterday and managed a half dozen snook, a over slot red and a few trout. I saw quite a few snook and reds but hopefully I won't have to worry about them. The weather is finally getting better and that will do wonders for the second half of the tarpon run.

Good Luck!

I specialize in light tackle saltwater, and fly fishing from the backcountry of the 10,000 Islands to flats of Pine Island Sound and the bay system of Charlotte Harbor. I have pick-up locations out of Ft Myers, Marco Island, Pine Island, Punta Gorda and Boca Grande. I like to target big fish. During warm months, tarpon, sharks, snook, redfish, cobia, king mackerel and big jacks are the main species sought after. Most of the winter months are devoted to redfish, trout, snook and grouper.
