Marco Island, Ft. Myers & Boca Grande

Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

It's still tarpon season!

It's over halfway through September and we're still catching tarpon. Not that that's unusual because we catch some tarpon every Septmeber. But this year I've been able to target strictly tarpon every single day the entire month. The fish have made themselves pretty easy to find by hanging near the passes feeding on crabs and pinfish since the harbor is pretty barren of any kind of bait right now. The tarpon should hold in our area until the first cold front which is usually some time in October.

Although I've not been targeting them, fishing for redfish has been on fire. The months of Septmeber, October and November are the best three month for redfish in our area. They tend to school on the flats this time of year. They are also the largest of the year. We get big schools of bull reds that move inshore and stack up near sand bars during low tide. When you find one of these schools they will hit almost anything that you throw in front of them. I like throwing top water. When using bait I like to use cut pinfish.

Good Luck,

Capt. Scott Hughes

I specialize in light tackle saltwater, and fly fishing from the backcountry of the 10,000 Islands to flats of Pine Island Sound and the bay system of Charlotte Harbor. I have pick-up locations out of Ft Myers, Marco Island, Pine Island, Punta Gorda and Boca Grande. I like to target big fish. During warm months, tarpon, sharks, snook, redfish, cobia, king mackerel and big jacks are the main species sought after. Most of the winter months are devoted to redfish, trout, snook and grouper.
