Ft. Myers - Offshore

Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

Winter Fishing Brings Snappers

Greetings;

To start I want by thanking all the readers and charters that made 2000 my best year ever. I had a blast smoking reels and drags on big poons, permit, cudas, and kings all spring and summer with you. Some of those big jewfish still amaze me when I look back at the pictures. And how about those sharks, that came up after a cuda would bite the tail off a little tunny right at boat side! Big cobia, redfish, and grouper bites that kept me so busy I did not have time to get a drink of water. Yes 2000 was and awesome year. Thank you so much!

Its been a bit on the chilly side our last few charters to say the least. Thankfully its warming up nicely this week.

The action has been like the tale of two cities. Either I have been in very protected backwater canals or well offshore.

Good fishing for jack's and black drum is going on up in the protected deeper canals and rivers mouths. We used DOA Terrorize and DOA shrimp to hook many of them up to fifteen pounds. The drum ate real shrimp and pieces of blue crab. There are also sheepies to be had if you stay persistent around the bridges.

Offshore the story for me has been to run to at least sixty feet of water and concentrate on snapper. Even with the water temperature being cold the there are plenty of very nice mangrove snappers on the ledges and wrecks now. Chum hard, use light long leaders, and use dead baits. Patience will pay off with the best snappers of the year. With the chilly water dead cut baits will out produce all others.

Watch the fog, some mornings its pretty interesting just finding the markers to get out. Keep your lights working and your horn handy. As for me, I'm shopping for radar!

Sincerely,

Capt. Rick Featherstone
