Ft. Myers - Offshore

Capt. Rick Featherstone

Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

Spring as Sprung!

Greetings;

With the Easter holiday and perfect weather combination that we experienced this past two weeks, there was lots of fishing and catching. For me things have moved into a pure spring and summer pattern.

Backwater and inshore fishing has been good with plenty of trout, both speckled and silver being caught. There are blacktip sharks and a few tarpon along the beach as well as snook on the structures and pompano in the fast water. Tarpon have moved into the deep channels and trenches as well. Cut baits have been the ticket to success. These are large fish all well over a hundred pounds.

The inshore wrecks are holding a wide variety of fish. On just a single stop over one of these and you are likely to catch grouper, snapper, flounder, blue runners, sheepshead, cudas, cobia, king mackerel, spanish mackerel, tarpon, little tunny, and permit. I was on one of these spots last week and was amazed at not only the variety of fish but how things changed over just a couple of hours. There might be little tunny's chasing bait all around then they disappear only to have a school of permit make a showing. Last Friday we had a double hookup with a permit and tarpon. We also spotted a huge hammerhead stalking the tarpon we hooked.

Offshore its been little tunny, cudas, kingfish, and snapper with the best bite. Grouper have been tough but a few have been caught. Limits of mangrove snapper from two to five pounds have been very steady over the ledges thirty plus miles out. The wrecks have been holding little tunny's, and some large sharks. We did manage to catch permit every day last week. Mostly migrating fish that were just mooning along the surface.

As I write this the wind is twenty five with heavy seas. When this bit of a blow is over and things settle I think the fish will be ballistic. Get your stuff ready, the big poonies will be making a big show this year.

Take Care & Have Fun,

Capt. Rick Featherstone
