Ft. Myers - Offshore

Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

Big Boys Back In Town!

Greetings;

Mother nature sent us some great weather last week and the fish responded. Large schools of bait have migrated into the area with the rising water temperatures. Permit, kings, cudas, spanish, and tarpon are all following the bait. Reef fishing is in a late winter pattern. All in all it a very exciting time to be fishing Southwest Florida.

Backwater fishing has come alive. Snook have moved out of the creeks and upper estuaries and down into the middle islands and even into the pass areas with good structure. We even caught a nice snook over a wreck in the Gulf yesterday. Big tarpon are in the bays as well. One hundred pound plus fish, were found rolling in deeper channels on the edge of grass flats. Getting them to eat a bait was a riddle I could not solve, but awesome to see. Good mixed bag action in the passes with everything from sheepshead & trout, to permit being caught there.

Off the beaches and out beyond things have lit up nicely. The reef is holding good snapper, sheepshead, and grouper action. Keeper grouper are difficult to get in numbers but we did get five on one trip last week. The pure action is hard to beat right now. Permit, kings, and cudas are over hard bottom and here in fishable numbers. The permit we have caught so far are good size averaging twenty pounds. The first wave of kings were smaller school sized fish. Over the last two days though some of the larger smoker kings have moved into within ten miles of the beach lurking the edges of large bait pods. Tarpon are just starting offshore. We spotted a few flyers over the weekend, then managed to release one just under a hundred pounds that ate a crab intended for a permit. Big fight on twelve pound test, but a thrill.

Sincerely,

Capt. Rick Featherstone
