Ft. Myers - Offshore

Capt. Rick Featherstone
July 20, 2003
Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

Variety Spices Up Fishing

Greetings,

The one thing that is constant and consistent lately is change. Changing conditions, water quality, bait, have kept me on my toes every day. Fish one pattern today does not mean anything tomorrow morning. Thankfully we live in and area that provides a wide variety of many opportunity’s so we have done well this week, even if it was not what I had planed for. Tarpon, Shark, Snook, Cudas, Permit, Goliath, Grouper, Snapper, and Mackerel, and even a huge sawfish were all part of our catching report this week just to give you and idea of I changed things up this week to keep us in the action. As anyone who has fished with me will tell you, I start with tarpon almost every morning during the summer, then work my way down the list until time runs out. I had one day that I hit the whole list before we had good success.

Offshore there is a good bite of snapper with a tons of smaller grouper. If a box full of keeper grouper is your thing, I cant help you. We were out twice this week and had a great time family fishing action on the reef. Each trip we caught at least eighty grouper both red and gag. Of that five were of keeper size. One true black came aboard for a picture and release as well. Perfect non stop action on light tackle. Yellowtail, Lane, Mangrove, and a couple of muttons, were the snappers. One day we had the Mango’s chummed right up to the boat from sixty feet. One of my good friends caught a seventy pound Goliath grouper on twelve pound test snapper gear that day as well.

There are not loads of cuda’s on the reef but enough to have fun with. We released a couple right at thirty five pounds hooked on lures this week. Man can those fish jump! Watch out if you try, they do jump in the boat. By the way, our weights are from a certified Boga Grip, no estimated by the crew! We caught one permit this week on a plastic crab. Permit fishing has been difficult lately for us.

Tarpon and shark have been hot and cold. There was a few days of red hot action along the beach from Bonita to Sanibel. If you put in your time looking and working hookups were the reward. On a couple of afternoons it was awesome fishing. Live baits and lures worked best for us. Same for sharks. We had a few trips with as many as fifty releases. One trip ended with a fourteen foot Sawfish. What and awesome creature.

Tight Lines and Calm Seas,

Capt. Rick
