Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

Wreck Slam
Greetings,
Crazy weather patterns have affected fishing lately. Morning thunderstorms, sloppy sea conditions, tropical systems. Mixed in have been beautiful chamber of commerce days like summer should be. I have only made two runs offshore this week the threat of thunderstorms. Both days we managed quality fish, although numbers were lower than usual for this time of year. We “wreck slammed” both days landing permit, cobia, and goliath. Cuda fishing was good as well, with several over fifteen pounds being released. Live bait is a challenge so keep your options open and have a few jigs and artificial lures ready. We only fly fished one day for cudas. They ate pilchard fly’s after lots of teasing and with live bait.
Closer to shore the tarpon bite has been slow along the beach. We are getting one here and there, but its work right now. The near shore wrecks and reefs have some nice fish on them but its not easy. A good run of cobia are in the area, big snook, cudas, and of course Mr. Goliath are all players. Mangrove snapper, jacks, blue runners, small grouper, and the like can keep you busy as well. Spanish mackerel as well as smaller king mackerel are in the area so keep and eye out and a silver spoon ready. We also found a nice school of Little Tunny’s willing to heat up our drags this week as well. Have plenty of extra line, leader, and other terminal gear because you will need it fishing these spots.
We fished the backwater twice and found it to be slow for a normal summer. Of course we were there in in sloppy weather so that did not help. In Estero bay we caught six snook to twenty four inches, four redfish to twenty two inches, and jack’s. Thank goodness for those awesome ten pound jacks, they really put a bend in your rod when you need one!
Tight Lines,
Capt. Rick
