Ft. Myers - Offshore

Capt. Rick Featherstone
April 8, 2004
Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

Jacks and Kings What a Pair!

Greetings,

Well it’s a busy spring for sure. Our SKA (Southern Kingfish Association) division eleven tournaments have completed. Our team consisting of Mark Combs, MJ Combs, their daughter Brittany, my wife Liz, and myself competed hard against the professionals. We had the time of our lives, and Marks Venture 34 showed us what a great boat she really is. Over the three tournaments our three fish that counted totaled ninety three point zero seven pounds. Our lady anglers finished in fourth, Junior angler fourth, and over all we finished thirteenth place with over three hundred competing boats. Our team has qualified for to compete for the SKA National Championship in Biloxi MS this November and we are thrilled.

Offshore its been windy and rough. On the calm days we had awesome action on big permit, really big amberjacks on lures, cuda’s, goliath grouper and kingfish. On the sloppy days depending on wind direction we have worked within ten miles most days with very good success on Spanish mackerel, medium permit to fifteen pounds, nice cuda’s to thirty pounds, unstoppable goliath grouper that came up and slammed a 24” gag into the side of the boat, snook, and other action fish.

Tarpon. There are tarpon in town and in the area. Local club members are starting to catch them and we have sighted several in our travels in and around the area. We start our tarpon season on Friday and will keep updating after then on the status of the poon fishing, but its looking good so far.

I have not fished the bay or passes in the last two weeks but I hear the fishing for snook, jacks, sharks, and redfish is good when they can get outside and catch bait.

Tight Lines,

Capt. Rick
