Ft. Myers - Offshore

Capt. Rick Featherstone
September 7, 2004
Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

Greetings,

Well where does one start? Mother Nature has thrown us two major hurricanes in three weeks.

This is the bad news. We lost twelve charters, canceled our trip to Bimini. We put many miles behind us for Charlie to the East coast with our new SeaVee in tow, and then watched on TV as Charlie tore up our friends and neighbors property. With Francis, there was no place to run or hide. We secured the Magic Hook as best we could here at home, batten down everything we could. We again watched as destruction and flooding took its toll.

Here’s the good news. We were very luck and sustained no damage. We are up and running and ready for action. Local hotels are up, restaurants, shopping and the like are all back and ready to go. Our boat is fine thankfully and our docks at Lovers Key are fine.

After Charlie the fishing cranked up a notch. I was surprised but happy. Both inshore and offshore were eating well. Gag grouper was as good as mid wintertime! We caught a ton of Spanish mackerel, gag grouper, red grouper, cudas to 30 pounds, and a few permit. One angler landed a three hundred pound goliath! Our family slipped away to the Florida Keys. We had a ball catching blackfin tuna, dolphin (dorado), and more.

As I write this the tails of Francis are just leaving our area. My first day back in the Gulf will be Thursday. Take care if you go and watch for floating debris.

Bow em’ Up,

One Two Punch
