Ft. Myers - Offshore

Capt. Rick Featherstone
June 10, 2007
Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

Summer Pattern Big Fish

Greetings,

Our summer pattern is starting to kick into full swing. Warm calm mornings and afternoon thunderstorms. It also means that tarpon are along the beaches, snook are on the beach and over offshore structures, lots of sharks. Our wrecks are loaded with bait, and there is a ton of bait schools around.

Fishing off of Fort Myers Beach in from ten to twenty feet of water the tarpon have been active in the early morning and late evening. They have been spooky so stealth is critical. At the sound of a trolling motor they sound and sometimes do not show again.

Drifting is the best approach on that school. Threadfin, pinfish, crabs have been our bait of choice but fly’s can produce with patience for the right shot. Tarpon have been active off Knapps point from the beach out to twenty five feet depending on time of day and tide. Catfish tails have worked best for us while anchored on the outgoing tide. Threadfin’s and crabs have worked while working pods of surface fish. Most of the tarpon at Knapps pointare in and around schools of bait. That has been either glass minnows or threadfins. Find the bait and you will find the tarpon. There are a few bonus fish in those schools of bait as well. We have caught some very nice snook and triple tail as well on our tarpon baits.

Our artifical reefs and wrecks are as good as I have seen this year. Plenty of bait on them has cuda, snook, permit, cobia, and big Spanish mackerel all in our area. Goliath grouper are on them as well in a big variety of sizes.

Sharks are mostly less than fifty pounds but there are just enough large one to keep shark fishing excitement high.

Sincerely,

Sincerely,

Capt. Rick
