Sea Trout, Redfish, Sheepshead our winter pattern

Capt. Gary Clark
January 17, 2011
Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

Sea trout, Redfish and Sheepshead, yes its january and the weekly coldfront pattern has set in.

With only one or two days a week being marginal weather the days between the fronts have been productive. Most of the higher water has been late in the day making pothole fishing the way to go, water clarity has been good on most days. Finding the deeper holes, working baits slowly and having a lot of patience pays off.

Setting your boat uptide and upwind of the potholes and trying different baits is key, I will usually try a redfish magic or a suspending plug first. If this works you will find the fish being more aggressive, if that does not work I will go to either a shrimp under a popping cork or a live shrimp on a jig head. I have also found a live shrimp on a circle hook with a spitshot 6 inches above it moved slowly on the bottom will get hard to get and many times bigger fish to eat.

We had quite a few days with water temperature below 60 so you can"t get in a hurry or you will spend a lot of time moving around. We also have had more than our share of two tide days were at times the water just does not move. If I know there are fish in a spot and this happens I will try several different baits before moving.

We will have several mild temperature days and light wind take advantage and get out and fish. Everyone I have talked to up north is freezing.

Tarpon season is just around the corner and days are filling up fast. Mid April thru July come and catch the fish of a lifetime. Reservations are suggested.
