Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

We are sliding into summer. The winds have calmed down, the heat is up and the fish are biting.
Tarpon sightings and reports are good from the Gulf at about 3 to 7 miles out. Watch for the frigate birds working over the water and you'll find the poons. Best bait is live threadfin herrings drifted on a free line. Second best is cut mullet or catfish tails down on the bottom
Seatrout have taken up residence on the back country flats of Estero Bay and Pine Island Sound. They'll readily go after live shrimp under a popping cork as well as an assortment of artificial baits and flies. The bite has been best on the outgoing tide.
Snook are located along the beaches. The water has cleared a bunch and they are easy to spot. We've been throwing Mirrolure 19MR's with success. Remember, snook season is closed. You can catch ‘em, you just can't keep ‘em.

Sharks are the BIG story. They are on just about every bit of structure in the Gulf of Mexico from 12 feet of water out to 30 feet. Lots of big bulls, hammerheads and blacktips. We've also landed several nurse sharks in the 9 to 10 foot range. Cut bait on the bottom is working best along with plenty of chum.
