Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

Milder weather mixed with new moon tides has made for a good bite in the bays and nearshore waters. Sheepshead, seatrout and pompano are all making the move as the water cools off.
Redfish are still eating on the higher tides. We've scaled the offerings down to small cut baits and live shrimp on jigs. The bigger fish are well up under the mangrove overhangs, so a good cast is a must to get them on the line.

The seatrout numbers and size are up. The recent Thanksgiving cold front pushed water temperatures down a notch and that was what was needed to push the trout into feeding. Most are concentrated in about 2 to 3 feet of water on the grass flats. Best bait has been live shrimp on a jig under a popping cork.
The Gulf is teeming with spanish mackerel, bluefish, jacks and ladyfish. Action is the name of the game. We've been tossing artificial plastic curly tail grubs on jig heads, with a lot of success. Just throw it as far as you can and retrieve it quickly.
If you are a fly fisherman you might want to break out the Clouser Minnow flies around the oyster bar cuts and points. You'll find a nice mix of jacks, ladyfish, pompano and trout. The best time for catching has been right around the changing of the tide from low to high. Deceivers, muddlers and schminnows are also good to add to the mix.
