Fishing report for the week ending 2/27/2011
When valentines day came and we changed from two or three fronts a week to 60"s at night and 80"s in the day I thought it was to good to be true. Here we are in the first week of March with no signs of going back to any cold weather. This week I switched from artificials and shrimp to live shinners that indicates the water has gone into the 70"s and will keep going up.
Trout fishing is off the charts and like last year with fewer snook around they are big, when I mean big the one pictured above has a three inch shinner in his mouth and if you do the math this one is around 27 inches and over 5lbs. There are 2 or3 of these caught almost every trip and plenty of slot fish to have for dinner.With several days of only 2 tides a day, slow incomming all day.
Snook and redfish were slower this week but with the warming trend and normal tides they will be better this upcoming week. These temperatures have everything on the move, snook will be leaving the canals and venturing out in the bay and with higher tides there will be alot more fishing in the mangroves and around the oysterbars.
Mackerel are around the passes and some areas have more ladyfish than you can catch. Pompano are around but not consistant on a daily basis and I still have not seen a bluefish. When they show up spring will be in full gear.
