Winter comes in with a bang

Capt. Gary Clark
December 27, 2010
Fort Myers - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing report for the week ending 12-26-2010

Well before winter began we have had colder than normal weather making December one of the coldest and slowest for charters that I can remember. Its been very hard to schedule trips very far ahead there are cold fronts comming in back to back at least one a week and this week we had two.

On the days we have been able to get out the fishing is decent with sea trout and redfish being the most popular. I have started winter pothole fishing on the low incomming tides and fishing the deeper canals and creeks have also produced well.

My favorites for sea trout are a redfish magic soft plastic or suspending plugs, both have produced some nice slot fish that customers will be glad to see when trout comes back in season in January. The old regular live shrimp on a popping cork either with a small circle hook or a pompano jig are also a good bet. Other areas that are producing on the low tides are transitions from the shallow flats in 3-6ft. of water.

Small redfish in the 16-18 inch class have also been good at times, a live shrimp either under a popping cork or on the bottom makes for great action with these guys that can show up by the dozens. There have been a few slot reds but the small ones are much more reliable.

There are ladyfish scattered through the bay that can be fun fishing especially for families. The water temperature has come back from a chilling 55 degree gulf last week and will probably dip back in the fifties with a strong front comming thru sunday and monday. By late tuesday or wednesday we should get a break with air temps back into the 70s. The good news is were not shovleing snow, get out and fish between the fronts.
