Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

April 12, 2011
INSHORE - The fishing has picked up this week starting with the trout bite in places like Bear Point, the Midway Road area and at Harbor Branch. The bite has been red hot at times for the anglers using a live shrimp under a popping cork or a soft plastic bait in a light color. The redfish bite has also been good around the Jack Island area and the docks along St. Lucie Village. Try a gold spoon first and if you don't have any luck switch to a live shrimp or a small pinfish. The catch and release snook action has been steady at places like the North Bridge, Turning Basin and the Ft. Pierce Inlet. A live bait has been the best choice. Still getting reports of nice snapper moving along the channel edges and they have been feeding on smaller live shrimp or small white baits.
OFFSHORE - The dolphin bite has been okay but, should improve as the month goes on. Over the weekend the bite seemed to be in 600 to 1200 feet of water and the bait of choice was a trolled ballyhoo. The biggest fish I saw was 35 pounds. The kingfish action has also improved with good numbers of fish being reported. We had fish from 10 to 49.7 pounds come into the docks and the bite was in 25 to 60 feet of water and to the north of the Ft. Pierce Inlet. Try slow trolling a live bait. The bottom fishing has been good over the wrecks and reefs for AJ's, triggerfish and snapper. Try a live bait for the AJ's and shrimp or squid for the rest. Along the beaches look for pompano, whiting, croakers and plenty of small sharks. These fish will take both live and frozen baits.
TEEN ANGLERS - This Sunday - April 17th us the last monthly inshore fishing tournament for the Treasure Coast Chapter of Teen Anglers. Anglers will meet at Jaycee Park this Sunday at 6:30am.
