Fishing Report for Ft. Pierce, Florida

Capt. Joe Ward
July 8, 2001
Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

Inshore fishing remains steady for trout, redfish, catch and release snook, snapper and tarpon. There were a lot of trout and snapper weighed in this past week.

TROUT - The trout bite has been best from just before daylight until about 8:00 or 8:30am. The trout are feeding on top water baits, live shrimp and live pigfish. The hot spots to the North this past week were the flats at Harbor Branch, Round Island, The Moorings at Vero Beach and the area around Queen's Cove. To the South the spots were the flats at Midway Road, Big Mud and Little Mud Creeks and Bear Point. I got reports of trout to 7 pounds being caught.

SNOOK - The catch and release snook are starting to stack up in the Ft. Pierce Inlet. The snook bite has been the best on the falling tides with the snook taking almost any kind of live bait. REMEMBER to practice C.P.R. CATCH - PICTURE - RELEASE

REDFISH - The redfish bite has improved over the past week with fish to 15 pounds being reported. The bait of choice has been small live crabs and live shrimp. The early morning bite has been the best.

SNAPPER - The snapper bite has greatly improved this past week with snapper to 3 & 1/2 pounds being caught. The bite has been the best at both the North and South Bridges on the falling tides. Also, the channel edges are producing a good number of snapper. Live shrimp is the way to go.

TARPON - The tarpon are here in good numbers with both Big Mud and Little Mud Creeks the places to be. The tarpon are still being picky about what they are eating, but try your favorite bait and see what happens. I had one report of a 45 pounder being caught on a live finger mullet at Big Mud Creek.

SHEEPSHEAD - The sheepshead are all over the place. Just try at any bridge, seawall, channel marker or structure you might know. The sheepshead are feeding on live shrimp.

REMEMBER - With the summer heat upon us take along plenty of water, sun screen, hats, sun glasses and long sleeve shirts.

Until next week, good fishing.

Capt. Joe Ward
