Fishing Report for Ft. Pierce, Florida

Capt. Joe Ward
August 3, 2001
Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

Trout fishing has picked back up even with all the fresh water in the river. Most of the fish are being caught on the high tide and early in the morning. It seems that most of the bigger trout are coming from around Bear Point where the water is a little clearer. I did have reports of trout action from the Power Lines all the way to the Jensen Beach Causeway. Top water baits and live shrimp are the way to go.

The snapper and sheepshead bite has also picked up along the channel edges and around the numerous bridges all the Treasure Coast. The best bite has been in the Stuart area around the bridges and the night bite has been the best.

The catch and release snook are thick in Taylor Creek and they are feeding on everything from live mullet to live shrimp. Remember that snook season opens on September 1st. If you haven't been doing any fishing make sure that your equipment is ready for the opening of snook season.

The tarpon are here and are roaming all over the river from Bear Cove all the way to the St. Lucie Inlet, all you have to do is look for them. As far as what they are feeding on, it's the same story. They are being PICKY! Try a small bait like a finger mullet or a live shrimp. I did get one report of a 40 pounder being caught on a plug but the angler didn't want to say what kind.

I would like to say WAY TO GO to the crew of Hook-N-Up. They fished the S.K.A. tournament at Port Canaveral last Saturday and Sunday. The guys just missed the placing but still made an impressive showing.

Until next week, good fishing.

Capt. Joe Ward
