Fishing Report for Ft. Pierce, Florida

Capt. Joe Ward
August 19, 2001
Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

Inshore fishing has been good all week even with the water being dirty. There has been plenty of trout action to the North around Harbor Branch area all the way to the 17th Street Bridge in Vero Beach. The trout action to the South all you need to do is start out around Bear Point and work your way south. Most of the trout are feeding on live shrimp but they will take a plastic bait if you throw it to them. On three charters this past week we were able to get our limits of trout early in the morning. The largest trout was 6.5 pounds and the rest were in the 3 and 4 pound range.

For you tarpon hunters, just cruise the channel edges starting at Big Mud Creek and head to the north and you will find the tarpon. On Wednesday, Bill Griffis from Augusta Georiga caught his first tarpon. It went 35 pounds and took the better part of the morning to get it instrested in feeding on the bait that we had. On Sunday we were at Big Mud Creek and there was numerous boats and plenty of tarpon, but, the same story - they were not feeding!!

Catch and release snook action is still good around Taylor Creek and the North Bridge when using live mullet. Most of the snook were in the 12 to 15 pound range. On Friday, my charter, Sam Clifton caught and released a 18 pounder. We were fishing in the Turning Basin and using live shrimp. Sam's brother took a quick picture and we released the snook. Remember that snook season opens on September 1st.

The snapper are finally starting to show up in good numbers along the channel edges and at the bridges. The Ft. Pierce Inlet has been producing a lot of snapper at night when using live baits like silver jennies or pigfish.

Until next week, good fishing.
