Fishing Report for Ft. Pierce, Florida

Capt. Joe Ward
September 21, 2001
Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

As our Nation mourns its loses from the tragedies of last week, I would like to say that now is the time for us to come together and support each other. Being a retired Lieutenant from the St. Lucie County Fire District, I mourn the loss of so many lives, but also celebrate the many acts of bravery. On a more personal note, the National Guard activated our new son-in-law of 5 months on Tuesday night. We hope and pray that he will remain in the United States.

The fishing has been on and off since the storm last week. The water is flowing from Taylor Creek and it looks like chocolate milk.

On the good side, the snook bite could not have been better this week. A live finger mullet was hard to beat if you were fishing in Taylor Creek. Live pigfish were the bait of choice for snook at the local bridges and the Turning Basin. The bite has been right at the tide change. The Ft. Pierce Inlet gave up a few nice snook in the 12 to 18 pound range this past week. Once again, live bait was the way to go.

The trout bite has been better than usual with the flats at Bear Point being the red hot place to be. The bite has been good from Bear Point all the way south to the Jensen Beach Causeway. Live shrimp and a popping cork was hard to beat, but the plastic baits did get their share of nice size trout. The early morning bite is still the way to go.

The snapper bite is getting better. The bridges, channel edges, inlet, and the City Marina have all been producing a lot of snapper in the 2 to 3 pound range. The night bite has been better for these fish and a live shrimp will help you get your limit of these fish.

The tarpon are still on the flats at Bear Point and are also cruising the inlet, but the best place to be is still at Big Mud Creek. I had reports of tarpon to 45 pounds being caught there on Tuesday and Wednesday. A live finger mullet was the bait of choice.

Until next week, good fishing.
