Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

On Saturday, Oct. 6, we fished the Vero Beach Fire Fighters Tournament. Team Slow & Easy sponsored by Magic Tilt Trailers brought home another award. My wife, Cammie, got 1st. place for her snook and also got biggest fish of the tournament. There were a lot of nice size trout and redfish that were weighed in but not many legal size snook. I would like to say way to go to Tommy Lyons and the other firefighters for doing such a good job on this tournament. This is the third year I have fished this tournament and it is always a sucess.
SNOOK - On Wednesday night, Sept.26, I took my son, Rob Ward, his co-worker, Johnny Cano, and Johnny brother, Armando Cano snook fishing. Rob and Johnny work for Pursuit Fishing Boats here in Ft. Pierce. Johnny had never caught a snook before that night and catch a snook he did. The snook that Johnny caught and released measured 54 inches in length and 26 inches in girth. If you do the math the snook weighed approximately 45.6 pounds. After releasing that snook Johnny caught a 31 incher. We were using live pigfish and also live large shrimp. I know it has been at least 15 years since I have seen a snook that size. What a way to start your snook fishing career.
The snook action has been good around the bridges, the Truning Basin and in the Ft. Pierce Inlet. The bridges are giving up most of the snook when fishing with pigfish or a mullet. The Inlet and the Turning Basin have had a better bite at night. Live shrimp or a feather have been the ticket here.
TROUT - The trout fishing started to pick up on Wednesday if you were fishing to the south of Bear Point. There were reports of trout to 6 pounds being caught when fishing with a live shrimp. There was also a good trout bite starting around the Midway Road area and continuning south to the flats just north of the Jensen Beach Causeway. Late afternoon has been the time to float a live shrimp or a finger mullet.
SNAPPER - The snapper are still feeding on the high tide when the water is the cleanest. Small live shrimp are your best bet to land one of these fish.
MULLET - The fall mullet run is in full swing with large pods of mullet everywhere. A lot of big game fish have been following the pods so throw your favorite bait in. You never know what you might catch.
Until next week, good fishing.
