Fishing Report for Ft. Pierce, Florida

Capt. Joe Ward
January 13, 2002
Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

Even with the cold temperatures the inshore fishing has been good through out the week. Lets start with the trout fishing. I had a lot of reports from anglers that were fishing in the deeper holes and along the channel edges. A trol-rite hook and a live shrimp or a rootbeer colored soft plastic bait was the way to go. Just remember, the water is cold and you will need to fish your bait slowly. The hot spots for trout this week were Harbor Branch, Fabor Cove and the Moorings in Vero Beach. Most of the bigger fish were caught later in the morning, around 10:00am. On two charters that I did this last week, we had a total of 6 trout that went 6 pounds and a lot of 2 and 3 pounders.

Now for the catch and release snook action. The best places to try are the local bridges in Ft. Pierce and the night bite has been better that the day. You will also need to fish at the tide change. A big live bait fished around the fenders or the pilings is the way to go.

The anglers who have been fishing from the area bridges are having a ball catching all the sandperch they want. Use a fresh dead shrimp, a #6 long shank hook and a small weight. Every now and then the anglers have been getting a surprise when they reel in a nice snapper or a sheepshead.

There are plenty of croakers around the deeper holes. Try using a small live shrimp and fish it very slow because of the water temps.

I did have reports of a few pompano to the south of the Power Lines on the West side of the river. It seems like most of the sction has been in the afternoon and sand fleas are the bait of choice.

Until next week, good fishing.
