Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

It has been a good week for inshore fishing starting with the snook bite. Early in the morning around the area bridges and in the Turning Basin with one of the top baits being silver mullet, followed by big croakers, pigfish and pinfish. And for the anglers who are throwing big feathers like the Flair Hawk, they have been getting their share of nice size snook at night. The Ft. Pierce Inlet is also starting to come alive with some big snook reported along with a lot of huge jacks on the start of the out going tide.
If it's trout you are looking for, then, you don't have to look to hard. The river is loaded with them and they are just about anywhere you can fish on the flats. The trick is to fish in 1 to 2 feet of water early in the morning with a topwater baits or small live baits like a finger mullet or a small pinfish and as the water starts to warm up you will need to move out to 5 or 6 feet of water. Looks like the summer trout pattern is already here.
The snapper are starting to move in the Ft. Pierce Inlet and into the river with good action reported along the channel edges and around most any structure. And, while you are snapper fishing you will have a good chance to pick up some nice sized sheepshead.
Surf fishing has been good for Spanish mackerel, whiting and plenty of big jacks.
Last Saturday, April 20th, was the 4th tournamnet for the local chapter of the Teen Anglers from Forest Grove Middle School. Trout and snapper were the most caught fish of the day. 1st place and biggest fish went to Taylor Purcell, 2nd place went to Jacob York, 3rd place went to John Parker and 4th place went to Yogi Cheatman. The next torunament will be held June 1st at the Pelican Yacht Club and will be a state wide tournament. If you would like more info on Teen Anglers go to the website at www.teenanglers.org or you can call 772-461-1335.
Until next week, good fishing.
