Fishing Report for Ft. Pierce, Florida

Capt. Joe Ward
May 8, 2002
Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

It has been a good week for the inshore anglers that wanted to get up early and work hard for a fish. With the hot temperatures and the clear water it is time to change a few things. Start by reducing the size of your line. I went from 10 to 14 pound test down to 8 to 10 pound test. And, when you are fishing on the flats you need to start out in 1 to 2 feet of water and after the sun had been up for a couple of hours you need to move out to 5 plus feet of water. I got good reports of trout being caught around the Midway Road area right at daylight and a top water bait is hard to beat.

Snook have also been active on the flats on the full tides with a small mullet or a pinfish being the baits of choice. Also, the snook have been feeding around the bridges and at the City Marina. Live bait like a pinfish or pigfish have been working the best.

The snapper are on the move with good reports coming from the channel edges both to the North and to the South of Ft. Pierce. Try a live shrimp, it has been hard to beat.

Until next week, keep fishing.
