Fishing Report for Ft. Pierce, Florida

Capt. Joe Ward
June 4, 2002
Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

This past Saturday, June 1st, was the fifth and final inshore fishing tournament for this school year for the local chapter of the National Teen Anglers from Forest Grove Middle School. It was also the 1st Teen Anglers Challenge Tournament which is a state wide tournament open to all Teen Anglers. The teens went after trout, snapper and redfish.

Gerald (Yogi) Cheatam was the the first place winner in the snapper division. Yogi is from the local chapter of Teen Anglers and this is his second year in the program. The first place winner in the trout divison was Rich Kelly. Rich is from the St. Cloud High School chapter of Teen Anglers and this is his third year as a Teen Angler. No one placed in the redfish division. The local chapter also awarded it's Teen Angler of the year which was Taylor Purcell. Taylor recieved this award bassed on his class attendance at Forest Grove Middle School, his points awarded for the fish he caught in the tournaments and also for the written report he did on tripletail. If you would like more info on becoming a Teen Angler just go to the website at www.teenanglers.org or call 772-461-1335.

Now for the fishing report.

The inshore fishing has been a little slow this past week with the winds making most anglers stay at the dock. Things did start to calm down and the trout bite did increase. All you need to find is 3 to 5 feet of clear water around the islands and have the bait well full of pigfish or live shrimp. The best spots have been at Round Island and also at Bear Point.

The Intercoastal has been giving up a few snapper in the 1 to 2 pound range. Try a small live shrimp or a piece of squid. I also had reports of flounder coming from the catwalks of the South Bridge and along the wall behind the St. Lucie Co. Library. A finger mullet or a live shrimp seems to be the most productive for these fish.

Until next week, keep fishing.
