Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

INSHORE - The inshore bite had been steady with good trout action producing trout to 5 & 1/2 pounds. To the North in the river the hot spots have been The Moorings in Vero Beach, Harbor Branch and Round Island in north Ft. Pierce, Bear Point and the Midway Road area to the South in Ft. Pierce and the flats around the Jensen Beach Causeway to the South. Live shrimp has been the bait of choice with soft rubber baits bringing in their share of trout. The early morning bite is still the best and fish in 3 to 5 feet of water.
The snook action has been good with reports of snook from the bridges in Vero Beach, both the bridges in Ft. Pierce as well as the Turning Basin and around the local bridges in the Jensen Beach - Stuart area. Live finger mullet have been the bait to use. The snook have been all over the flats also. I did get a e-mail from Linda Glass stating that her son, Wesley, caught and released a 40 inch snook while fishing on the Sandbar Flats and that her husband, Virgil, caught and released a 36 inch snook in the same place. They also release 12 to 15 shorts. There has also been a steady snook bite at the South Jetty in Ft. Pierce.
There has been a good redfish bite along the dock lines at St. Lucie Village and also around the Ft. Pierce Inlet. On Saturday we had 5 redfish brought into the docks and all were caught around the Inlet. Several were released that were over the slot size. The dock line at St. Lucie Village has been holding a good number of redfish.
I got a e-mail from Ed Mercado about his trip to the South Jetty. Ed caught a 2 pound bluefish and a jack cervelle on a D.O.A. Cal shad and jig head and also a small flounder on a live shrimp. On Sunday Ed caught a small gag on a free lined mullet using a #3 circle hook. The flounder bite has also been good around the catwalks of the South Bridge and along the wall behind the Ft. Pierce Library.
OFFSHORE - The big news this weekend was the good dolphin bite. Most of the dolphin were in deeper water, 140 to 250 feet and they were scattered. On Saturday we had about 15 dolphin come into the docks that went from 12 to 15 pounds and on Sunday there were 6 with one that was 25 pounds. Most of these fish were caught on small ballyhoo to the south of the Ft. Pierce Inlet.
The kingfish were in 70 to 130 feet of water and were caught on live baits. Fish were reported out of the St. Lucie Inlet as well as the ft. Pierce Inlet. I did get a couple of reports of sailfish releases from the south of the St. Lucie Inlet. We did have 2 nice size wahoo, 18 and 25 pounds, come into the docks. These fish were caught to the south of the Ft. Pierce Inlet.
The snapper and grouper bite has improved with snapper to 10 pounds and grouper to 25 pounds coming from the Offshore Bar in 90 feet of water out of the Ft. Pierce Inlet and from around the Six Mile Reef out of the St. Lucie Inlet.
