Fishing Report for Ft. Pierce, Florida

Capt. Joe Ward
October 22, 2003
Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

October 24, 2003

INSHORE - Trout fishing has been just about the only steady thing going with fish to 6 pounds being reported around the Midway Road area. Most of the other fish have been small and caught in places like The Moorings, Harbor Branch and Little Mud and Big Mud Creeks. A.T. O'Hare caught fish like trout, jacks and small snook on a fly rod using a brown and chartreuse Clouser Minnow and fished in four feet of water around Little Mud Creek. There are reports of redfish still hanging out around the dock lines at St. Lucie Village. A nice size live shrimp has been hard to beat.

The snapper bite has slowed some to the North in the river but the bite has improved to the south of the South Bridge in Ft. Pierce with fish to 3 pounds being reported. These snapper were caught on live greenies or live shrimp.

The flounder are slowly working their way to the area with a handful of big flounder being caught from the catwalks of the South Bridge in Ft. Pierce. Small live finger mullet has been the trick to land these fish.

If it is snook you are looking for then you are like most anglers. It has been the slowest season I've seen in years. There are still snook being caught but just not like it should be. I only had 15 snook reported since last week and most were taken from around the local bridges in Vero Beach, Ft. Pierce and Stuart. Live mullet was the bait to use. There has been plenty of snook spotted around the lighted docks at night but only a few are eating. On Tuesday I did have a report of a 31 pound snook that was caught and released from up in Taylor Creek. A top water bait was used and the fish was caught about 10:00am. Down south around the Stuart area the reports are about the same except for the good of black drum to 15 pounds that are being caught from the local bridges.

SURF - The surf is still rough but there are some whiting being reported this week to the south of the Nuclear Power Plant. There are a lot of bluefish showing up around the bait pods from Ft. Pierce to Stuart. And as always there has been plenty of jacks to add to the mix.

OFFSHORE - The only offshore report I have is that there are a few kingfish in 70 feet of water and a handful of sailfish to the south of the St. Lucie Inlet. The only boats fishing this area are the big boats over 35 feet and even they are saying that it has been rough.

If you would like to report a catch, call me at 772-201-5770 or e-mail me at [email protected]. You can also contact me on the web at www.captjoeward.com

Until next week, keep fishing.
