Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

October 30,2003
INSHORE - The inshore action has been on one day and off the next, but for the most part it has been steady. There has been a good number of trout reported at places like The Moorings in Vero Beach, at Harbor Branch and Middle Cove in Ft. Pierce and on the flats just south of the Jensen Beach Causeway. Try using a live shrimp fished under a popping cork. Also soft rubber baits have been working well after about 8:00am. Most of redfish reported this week came from the area of the Dome or the dock lines along St. Lucie Village. The out going tide was the most productive.
The snook bite is still way off from last year but I am still getting some reports of fish being caught around the local bridges in Vero Beach. Ft. Pierce and Stuart and also the Ft. Pierce and St. Lucie Inlets. Most of the snook were caught on live mullet.
The snapper bite has slowed down some but there is still plenty of legal sized snapper along the channel edges, you just have to look for them. Live shrimp is the way to go to land one of these fish.
The bluefish and spanish mackerel have started to make their way into the river with a good number of both being reported around the Turning Basin and in both Inlets. The flounder bite is still going strong if you are fishing on the sandbar just south of the City Marina in Ft. Pierce. Try using a finger mullet or a large live shrimp and get it on the bottom.
OFFSHORE - The sea conditions haven't been great but there were a few good days to go out and the anglers that were able to go did catch fish. They got kingfish in about 70 feet of water out of the Ft. Pierce Inlet and around the Six Mile Reef out of the St. Lucie Inlet. There was a handful of nice dolphin in 130 to 160 feet of water out of the Ft. Pierce Inlet but they were scattered at best. Most of the sailfish have been to the South around the St. Lucie Inlet. There was a good number of sails reported on Monday when the wind was calm.
Bottom fishing has been ok with snapper to 6 pounds reported on the Offshore Bar in 90 feet of water and grouper to 28 pounds coming from over the wrecks in 160 feet of water. There has been plenty of spanish mackerel, bluefish and big jacks cruising the beaches of the Treasure Coast. Just look for the feeding birds and you will find the fish.
If you would like to report a catch, call me at 772-201-5770 or e-mail me at [email protected]. You can also contact me on the web at www.captjoeward.com
Until next week, keep fishing.
