Fishing Report for Ft. Pierce, Florida

Capt. Joe Ward
December 17, 2003
Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

December 17, 2003

INSHORE - Snook action has been good in the Ft. Pierce Inlet right up until it closed on the 15th. Big, live greenies or pinfish were hard to beat. Also in the Inlet there has been some big redfish, most were to big to keep, along with plenty of jacks, spanish mackerel and some flounder.

The catch and release trout action has also been steady around the Midway Road area and at places like Round Island and Herman's Bay. Try using a live shrimp and a popping cork.

The channel edges have been full of small snapper, sheepshead, jacks and blue runners. The sandperch bite has started at the catwalks of the South Bridge in Ft. Pierce. Try using a #6 hook, a light weight and a piece of shrimp.

Still plenty of reports of pompano to the south of the Nuclear Power Plant. Most of the pompano are being caught on sand fleas or Nylor jigs. The croakers are really biting down around the Stuart area but have not shown up here in good numbers yet.

I got an e-mail from Pat O'Hare stating that he caught bluefish to 4 pounds and trout to 22 inches while fishing around Little Mud Creek. Pat was using a green Clouser minnow. Also, Pat said the water clarity was great.

OFFSHORE - With the seas being sloppy, most of the small boats are having to stay inshore. The bigger boats are reporting good sailfish and dolphin action if you can stand the conditions. Most of the fish reported were caught on ballyhoo.

Bottom fishing was good when the seas did lay down. Both snapper and grouper have been feeding on the Offshore Bar in 90 feet of water out of the Ft. Pierce Inlet and along the Six Mile Reef out of the St. Lucie Inlet.

The kingfish have been scattered in 70 to 90 feet of water this past week but there has been plenty of small sharks and bonita to keep anglers busy. On the beach there has been small bluefish and plenty of jacks. Try a small spoon to land one of these fish.
