Fishing Report for Ft. Pierce, Florida

Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

February 5, 2004

INSHORE - This week snook has been slim picken's with the opening of snook season. Reports haven't been that great with a few fish around all the local bridges, some from the Inlets and several from off the Jetty. Most of the snook from the Inlets were over the slot limit size. I did get an e-mail from a Port St. Lucie angler stating the he was fishing the North Fork of the St. Lucie and did catch some nice snook and also jacks to 20 pounds.

If it is trout you are looking for then you don't have to look to hard with plenty of fish being caught in 3 to 4 feet of water at places like the Mooring Flats in Vero Beach, Harbor Branch to the North in Ft. Pierce and to the South it is places like Little Mud Creek and around the midway Road area. Try a live shrimp or a soft rubber bait.

The big sheepshead are here with good reports coming from the area's bridges from Vero Beach to Stuart and also around just about any structure you can fish near. A small live shrimp has been the ticket to getting these fish. The sandperch are what visitors are looking for and they don't have to look to far. The catwalks of the South Bridge in Ft. Pierce has been red hot for these fish if you were there at the right tide. The incoming tide has been hard to beat. The pompano bite seems to be down south but if it is ladyfish you want, the flats are full of them and they are hitting just about anything you throw at them.

The St. Lucie chapter of the National Teen Anglers is scheduled to have it's monthly fishing tournament this Saturday, February 7th at Jaycee Park at 7:00am. Hopefully the rain will stay away long enough to get the tournament in. If you are interested in Teen Anglers just go to the website at www.teenanglers.org for more info.

OFFSHORE - Not a lot to report from the offshore anglers other than a dolphin and that is not a bad thing. Try trolling a ballyhoo in 190 to 230 feet of water out of the Ft. Pierce Inlet. The sails have been in closer, try in the 130 foot range. The anglers who gave me reports were using both live baits and trolling ballyhoo. If it is kingfish you are looking for you might want to try in 90 feet of water. The kings have been taking live baits or trolling spoons with strip baits.

The snapper and grouper have been steady but not red hot just yet. I did get reports of some nice size cobia from anglers who were bottom fishing for snapper and grouper. There are plenty of bluefish, spanish mackerels and a few pompano cruising up and down the beaches.
