Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

February 26, 2004
INSHORE - Snook fishing has been slow with only a handful of fish being reported around the Turning Basin and the area's bridges. There was a good bite in the Ft. Pierce Inlet on the last of the out going tide on Sunday and Monday. Down south around the Jensen Beach and Stuart area they are reporting about the same thing, some snook around the bridges but nothing has been red hot.
The trout have been scattered from Vero Beach all the way south to Jensen Beach and most are feeding on live shrimp in 2 to 4 feet of water. The most action last week seemed to be the sheepshead, snapper and sandperch around the channel edges and bridges. Wayne Wilson, Owen Totman and Tom Keller caught their share of big sheepshead this past weekend while fishing near the South Bridge in Ft. Pierce. Most of the fish were in the 2 &1/2 to 4 pound range and were caught on live shrimp. The trio also caught a good number of mangrove snapper. The croakers feed for two days and shut down again in Ft. Pierce, but are still plentiful around the Roosevelt Bridge. I got an e-mail from Yvonne Gorney of Gaffer's Bait & Tackle stating the Sand Sprint Park was a good place to get mangrove snapper, sandperch and sheepshead this past week. They were hitting on frozen shrimp.
OFFSHORE - Before the winds started on Tuesday the offshore bite has been steady with scattered dolphin in about 100 to 140 feet of water, due east of the Ft. Pierce Inlet. The cobia have been there one day and nowhere to be found the next. The action should get better next month. Yvonne Gorney of Gaffer's reported that sails were caught in 60 to 80 feet of water to the east of the St. Lucie Inlet on both trolled ballyhoo and live baits. She also reported that the cobia were found on the Six Mile Reef and were hitting live crabs and that the grouper catches were good over the Loran Tower Reef with sardines being the bait of choice. Mike Johnson brought in a 22 pounder for them to weigh. Also, Craig Gorney caught a 42 pound wahoo on trolled ballyhoo in 200 feet of water while fishing aboard the Mustache Man.
Bottom fishing was starting to heat back up in 60 to 95 feet of water with some nice mangrove snapper to 10 pounds being reported and grouper in the 20 pound range coming from along the Offshore Bar in 90 feet of water out of the Ft. Pierce Inlet.
