Fishing Report for Ft. Pierce, Florida

Capt. Joe Ward
March 24, 2004
Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

March 25, 2004

INSHORE - This has been one of those weeks when you work on your fishing gear, boat or catch up on your honey do's you have been putting off since the opening of snook season.

I did have reports of a few snook being caught around the area's bridges but the weather has kept most anglers at home. The fish that were reported were caught after dark and on large live shrimp.

If you can find a place out of the wind around the Spoil Islands you might have had a chance at some trout but, they have been scattered. Just about the only thing going strong is the sand perch and a few nice croakers being caught from the catwalks of the South Bridge in Ft. Pierce. This has been a hot spot for several weeks now.

I did get a report from Jim Lowe that on Saturday evening while snook fishing in the Turning Basin he caught a 82 pound black drum on 30 pound test line and a live shrimp.

Last Saturday was the first Salt Water Regional's for the Nation Teen Anglers with teens from St. Lucie, Martin and Volusia counties competing. In the high school division first place and biggest fish trophies went to Kyle Wood from New Smyrna Beach High School - second was J.C. Krall also of New Smyrna High and third was David Adams of Westwood High School in Ft. Pierce. In the middle school division first place went to Alex Shaffer of Forest Grove Middle School in Ft. Pierce, second was Richard Salamak of North Port Middle School in Port St. Lucie and third was Nick Long from Stuart Middle School in Stuart.

The next regular monthly tournament for the St. Lucie County Teen Anglers will be on April 17th at 7:00am at Jaycee Park in Ft. Pierce. For more info on the Teen Angler's program go to the web at www.teenanglers.org or www.teenanglers.com If you don't have a Teen Anglers program in your school you can get all the info you need to get started in the program.

OFFSHORE - Sunday was the only good day we have had this week with kingfish reported in 50 to 80 feet of water up and down the Treasure Coast. If it was dolphin you were looking for you wanted to try 90 to 240 feet of water to the south of the Ft. Pierce Inlet or just off the Six Mile Reef out of the St. Lucie Inlet. I did get reports of some nice cobia hanging around the area.

Bottom fishing for snapper and grouper was good but again all this was on Sunday. Hopefully the winds will calm down before the weekend and we can get to some serious fishing.

If you would like to report a catch, call me at 772-201-5770 or e-mail me at [email protected]. You can also contact me on the web at www.captjoeward.com
