Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

April 15, 2004
INSHORE - This has been one of those weeks that the weather just didn't cooperate at all with the high winds and the rain. These conditions made fishing tough but for the diehards that fished between the storms and found the clean water on the high tides they did catch fish.
Reports of snook around the area bridges from Ft. Pierce to Stuart has been steady with live greenies working the best and the big greenies have been plentiful after dark all around the South Bridge in Ft. Pierce. On the days that you could get up on the flats there was a good number of snook up around the Harbor Branch area.
There has been some big trout caught during the bad weather around the Round Island area which was one place you could get out of the wind over the weekend. There were good reports of trout and redfish action around the Queen's Cove area to the North in the river and around the Midway Road area to the South. The best bite was just after daylight and soft rubber baits fished in 3 feet of water or less.
Again, when the weather permitted there were plenty of sand perch, sheepshead and small snapper being caught on the catwalks of the South Bridge in Ft. Pierce. Even with the wind the surf fishing has been good with a lot of spanish mackerel, bluefish and big jacks being reported all along the Treasure Coast. There were a small number of whiting reported around the Ocean Village area.
This Saturday is the last monthly fishing tournament of the school year for the St. Lucie County chapter of the National Teen Anglers. The teens will leave Jaycee Park at 7:00am and weigh in will be at noon. Their next tournament will be for the Teen Angler of the year and the date will be announced at a later date. For more info on Teen Anglers, go to www.teenanglers.org or www.teenanglers.com
OFFSHORE - Again, due to the weather this week only the dedicated anglers ventures offshore but the rewards were good. There were a lot of kingfish reported in 50 to 60 feet of water off Ft. Pierce and along the Six Mile Reef out of Stuart. I weighed in one king that went 35 pounds last Friday.
The dolphin were scattered but several nice fish to 30 pounds were brought into the docks and were caught in 135 feet of water on small ballyhoo. I did get reports of a few cobia caught to the north of Ft. Pierce in 50 feet of water.
The snapper and grouper bite was slow, again due to the weather conditions but a handful of snapper and grouper were caught along the Six Mile Reef out of Stuart and along the Offshore Bar in 90 foot of water out of Ft. Pierce.
And if you want to have some fun, along the beaches there have been big jacks, spanish mackerel and bluefish cruising up and down the Treasure Coast. Try a small spoon or a small live bait.
