Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

April 28, 2004
INSHORE - The snook action has been good during the dark hours around all the area bridges and docks along Indian River Drive. Greenies, live shrimp or feathers seem to be working the best. Around the Ft. Pierce and St. Lucie Inlets try a live mullet fished on the bottom.
Trout action remains strong in the area's where there is clean water, but you don't have to look to hard to find it on the high tides. I got an e-mail from Pat O'Hare stating that he fished Middle Cove on Saturday and Sunday and caught a good number of small trout each day. There have been a few nice redfish reported along the South side of Round Island and also along the dock's to the south of the South Bridge. Large live shrimp or a gold or silver spoon are your best bets.
There have been a lot of reports of under size grouper coming from everywhere there is any kind of structure. They make for a good fight on light tackle but they have been just short, most have been under 20 inches. Still plenty of sandperch around the bridges as well as plenty of sheepshead. Down around the bridges in Stuart they are still getting reports of croakers, black drum and scattered pompano.
OFFSHORE - There have been a lot of kingfish reported, especially small one like 10 to 15 pounders. It looks like the big kings have started moving to the beaches and your best bet should be in 15 to 40 feet of water. Big live baits like blue runners, spanish mackerels or mullet will work just fine. Just want to take a minute to say GOOD LUCK to my son Capt. Rob Ward and the crew of the HOOK-N-UP. They will be fishing the Stuart Kingfish Tournament this coming weekend.
The dolphin reported have been coming from 140 to 220 feet of water and they have been scattered. Also, several wahoo to 40 pounds were caught to the south of the St. Lucie Inlet. We did have a couple of smaller cobia - 25 to 30 pounds - come into the docks over the weekend.
Bottom fishing has been OK but not red hot. The strong north tide is making it hard to bottom fish. There were a few snapper to 9 pounds reported and grouper to 28 pounds reported coming from about 60 to 90 feet of water out of the Ft. Pierce Inlet and along the Six Mile Reef out of the St. Lucie Inlet.
I did get quite a few reports of permits down at the Boils off from the Nuclear Power Plant if you were lucky enough to stay away from the bluefish and spanish mackerel.
