Fishing Report for Ft. Pierce, Florida

Capt. Joe Ward
May 5, 2004
Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

May 5, 2004

INSHORE - The wind has the water stirred up again this week and it has made fishing tough. There is still a pretty good trout bite on the high tides when the water is the cleanest. I had reports of trout to 10 pounds this past week. Most of the big fish are coming from 3 to 5 feet of water and are being caught on live baits live greenies or mullet.

Snook action remains steady around the area's bridges after dark when the big schools of greenies and mullet are coming through. Both the Ft. Pierce and Stuart Inlets are producing some snook on the end of the outing tide. There have been a few tarpon showing up in the inlets and they have been feeding on mullet. I also had a few reports of redfish along the docks along Indian River Drive.

Still plenty of snapper and under sized grouper being caught around the channel edges all along the Treasure Coast. Despite the heavy surf there has been plenty of whiting, pompano, bluefish and spanish mackerel along the beaches.

OFFSHORE - Not much to report except that there were a few kingfish caught in 30 to 50 feet of water on Saturday. I had on boat come into the docks on Friday with 5 nice size dolphin that were caught in 130 to 180 feet of water straight out of the Ft. Pierce Inlet. The dolphin were 12 to 21 pounds and caught on small ballyhoo. There were a good number of bluefish and spanish mackerel along the beaches. After that the wind has made the sea conditions hard to fish.
