Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

May 20, 2004
INSHORE - With the wind still blowing it is making the seas rough and the inshore water dirty and most of the regular anglers are staying home. So, I thought I better beat the bushes a little this week to find a fishing report.
I first drove to Round Island boat ramp on North A1A only to find one truck and boat trailer. John Russ of Vero Beach was launching his boat. He told me of good trout action the day before just north of Round Island. Most of the trout were 15 to 17 inches and caught on live shrimp. John also reported a few redfish in the same area but said he could not get them to bite.
Heading back south on A1A I stopped at the old P. V. Martins restaurant parking lot to see who was surf fishing. Bill and Maggie Parker from Brownsville, N.J. had 4 whiting, 1 pompano and a lot of seed weed. The surf was rough and it was taking a 4oz. weight to even hold the bottom. They were fishing with fresh dead shrimp. Over around the Little Jim Bridge area Mike Vaughn and his 6 year old son, Jimmy, had no fish to report but were still having a good time.
I stopped by the catwalks of the South Bridge and several anglers reported good snook action while fishing there after dark and for the anglers using live mullet for bait. But, during the daytime most of the fish were sandperch and sheepshead. Joe Mitchell did catch a nice black drum while I was there and it was close to 6 pounds.
Over around Bear Point dock, Paul and Mary Graff reported that fishing was slow with a few jacks, 2 small trout and a bluefish. All of the fish were caught on a live shrimp fished under a popping cork. The best catch I saw was a 6 pound trout and a 30 inch snook caught by Allen Johnson. Allen was fishing just outside of Little Mud Creek. Everything was caught on a red and white Zara Spook.
Down around the Roosevelt Bridge, Ned Potter reported snook action at night and during the daylight hours it has been black drum, small snapper and plenty of catfish. When I arrived at the Palm City Bridge it was empty but after waiting for about 30 minutes or so Bob Herman pulled up with his boat and reported the last 2 days he had been catching sheepshead, small snapper and still a few croakers and that was about all he could find.
OFFSHORE - Not much to report -- the bigger boats that ventured out reported rough seas and plenty of seasick people. One boat had a handful of dolphin in 120 to 140 feet of water. They were caught on small ballyhoo. There were a few kings reported in about 90 feet of water and they were caught on live blue runners. A few wahoo and cobia were taken on Tuesday while fishing straight out of the Ft. Pierce Inlet. The reports seem to be about the same out of both the Ft. Pierce and St. Lucie Inlets. Hopefully the wind will at least slow down and people can get offshore to fish.
