Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

June 3, 2004
INSHORE - The inshore fishing has been a little on the slow side with the wind making the water dirty. Trout have been scattered up and down the Treasure Coast with the best reports coming from the area around Queen's Cove on the full tide. Most of the big trout are being caught on live mullet.
The last night of snook season was a slow one with a few fish being reported around the North Bridge in Ft. Pierce and the Roosevelt Bridge in Stuart. Again, mullet or greenies were the baits of choice. The fish caught at the North Bridge were 10 pounds or under.
I did get good reports of redfish being caught early in the morning along the dock lines around St. Lucie Village. Small crabs have been producing the most fish.
The snapper bite along the channel edges is improving but most of the fish are still small. Try using a live shrimp or a piece of squid and fish it on the bottom with a trol-rite hook.
I got several reports of flounder being caught around the channel markers in the Jensen Beach area. A live shrimp or a finger mullet has been the best bet to get one of these fish. All of the area's bridges are holding black drum, small snapper, and sheepshead. There are still plenty of big jacks working the St. Lucie River.
The Teen Angler of the Year tournament that was scheduled for June 6th, has been rescheduled for July 11th at 7:00am at Jaycee Park. Please make a note of this.
OFFSHORE - There is not much to brag about for most anglers but there were a few that had good luck. Most of the kingfish were in 30 to 90 feet of water and along the Six Mile Reef. The kings were chasing schools of bait. We did have two fish in the 30 pound range come in on Friday. Both were caught on live baits.
It seemed that everyone caught bonita while fishing for dolphin. Only a few dolphin came in over the weekend. Several were in the 15 pound range and one was in the high twenty's. All were caught on yellow/green skirted ballyhoo in 70 to 90 feet of water.
I did get reports of a few wahoo in the 30 pound range being caught in 100 feet of water out of the Ft. Pierce Inlet. Also, a few sailfish in 90 to 150 feet of water to the north of the Ft. Pierce Inlet.
Bottom fishing has been steady for big snapper and grouper. Most of the bigger fish have come from the deeper water - 150 feet of deeper. I weighed in a few snapper that went from 10 to 14 pounds and several grouper to 23 pounds.
On the beaches there has been plenty of big jacks and whiting. On Saturday and Sunday there was also a lot of spanish mackerel to keep you busy. At the Boils of the Nuclear Power Plant there has been a few permit and also catch and release
snook.
