Fishing Report for Ft. Pierce, Florida

Capt. Joe Ward
August 4, 2004
Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

August 6, 2004

INSHORE - There has been a lot of fresh water coming into the Indian River this week due to the rain and this has made fishing a little tough for most anglers. The experienced trout anglers have been finding trout in the clear water close to the Intercoastal. Most of the fish are being caught on either pigfish or live shrimp.

The redfish action has been limited to the area around Queen's Cove and it has been an early morning bite. Try using a gold spoon or a D.O.A. glow shrimp.

The catch and release snook action has been red hot around the area's spillway's like at Taylor Creek. Live mullet and top water baits have been taking most of the fish. I got several e-mails about nice slot sized snook caught and released at Taylor Creek and they were all caught on live mullet.

The Intercoastal has been loaded with legal sized snapper. Small live shrimp or small live white baits have been working the best. On two charters this week we had our limit of snapper in less than one hour. There has been a good number of flounder being reported coming from the catwalks of the South Bridge in Ft. Pierce. Most of the bigger flounder have been caught on big live shrimp and a trol-rite hook. The first part of the out going tide seems to be the best time to fish for the flounder.

OFFSHORE - The offshore action has been slow with only a handful of dolphin being reported along the Treasure Coast. Most of the dolphin were in 135 feet of water and south of the Ft. Pierce Inlet. The sailfish bite has been good between the Ft. Pierce and St. Lucie Inlets in 50 to 100 feet of water.

The cobia bite has slowed some but there were reports of fish to 50 pounds coming from around the bait pods off the beaches in 30 to 50 feet of water. As usual the kingfish, bonita and cuda's have been everywhere. Just find the bait and you will find these fish.

Bottom fishing has been off some due to the cold bottom temperatures. I still had several reports of good sized snapper in 90 to 140 feet of water. The grouper bite has slowed but the ones that were reported have been big - 40 to 50 pounds. These fish were all caught on live baits.

TEEN ANGLERS - With the start of the new school year - National Teen Anglers has two events coming up. On September 11th, at the Pelican Yacht Club the Teen Anglers will have their 2004 Award's Banquet. The fun will start at 10:30am with lunch being served at noon and the awards presentation will be at 1:30pm.

The first inshore fishing tournament of the new school year for the Teen Anglers will be on Sept. 26th at 7:00am at Jaycee Park in Ft. Pierce. If you are interested in becoming a Teen Angler just go to www.teenanglers.org and you will find all the info you need to join Teen Anglers.
