Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

September 22, 2004
INSHORE - Other than a few days of heavy rain the inshore fishing has been steady but nothing great. There are still a lot of anglers working on their homes that were damaged by Hurricane Frances.
The best action has been the snook at the Inlets, spillways and bridges. Try the Taylor Creek Spillway during the day with either a top water bait or a live mullet. Try any of the bridges from Vero Beach south to Stuart at night and use a live mullet or a large live shrimp. There has been plenty of snook in the Ft. Pierce and St. Lucie Inlets on the tide changes. Use a live mullet with have been very plentiful as the fall mullet run has started. The Roosevelt Bridge and the Taylor Creek Spillway have been the hot spots for snook.
The snapper and sheepshead bite has started to pick up around the bridges from Stuart to Ft. Pierce and along the channel edges. Live shrimp will work if you can find them.
Trout fishing is still on the slow side due to the dirty water. The best time seems to be from daylight until about 8am. Most of the fish are taking live finger mullet or a top water bait. Try the area to the south of the Jensen Beach Causeway on the East side of the river. In the Ft. Pierce area try along the docks of the St. Lucie Village, also look for some redfish in that same area. Try are still lots of tarpon all over the Intercoastal. They have been rolling but are still slow to feed. The best bait has been live mullet.
OFFSHORE - With only a few fishable days offshore since the storm the reports have been slow coming in. But, the ones that did fish reported dolphin action in 90 to 120 feet of water with plenty of debris floating around. Also a good number of sailfish reported to the south of the Ft. Pierce Inlet and all the way to Jupiter. The depths have varied from 70 to 135 feet of water. Most fish are being caught on ballyhoo.
Plenty of kingfish being reported along the Offshore Bar and the Northeast Grounds out of the Ft. Pierce Inlet. Got a few reports of cobia and wahoo through out the Treasure Coast area.
The conditions for bottom fishing have been tough but some anglers are reporting snapper, sea bass and every now and then a cobia or kingfish in 55 to 80 feet of water to the north of the Ft. Pierce Inlet. Also, a good tarpon bite at the Cove off of Vero Beach. Big, live mullet are what you need for the big silvers. There have been reports of a good number of fish in the 8- to 125 range.
Lets hope the seas will calm down, I know everyone is ready to start fishing again.
