Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

October 21, 2004
INSHORE - The trout bite has been red hot all over the river with quite a few trout over 8 pounds being reported. Live bait is working the best but a top water bait early in the morning has also been good. The hot spots for the trout has been the flats around Harbor Branch, Bear Point and the Midway Road area in Ft. Pierce and along the West side of the river in Jensen Beach.
There has also a lot of redfish being caught on the flats, from the bridges and in the Inlets. David Adams reported he caught 2 redfish along the docks of St. Lucie Village as well as a keeper snook. A gold spoon or a finger mullet has been hard to beat.
Snook fishing has also been good along the docks on Indian River Drive at night. The bigger fish have been coming from the spillways, the Roosevelt Bridge and up in the St. Lucie River. A live mullet has been the way to go.
Catches of snapper, black drum, bluefish and spanish mackerel are being reported coming from the bridges from Vero Beach south to Stuart. Live shrimp has been the bait of choice for these fish.
SURF - With most of the area beaches open the fishing seems to be good with reports of croakers, bluefish, sandperch, whiting and a few pompano. These fish have been caught on either a live shrimp or sandfleas. And, if you go early enough you just might get a snook.
OFFSHORE - There is still plenty of dirty water offshore but if you go deep enough -- 500 to 1000 feet -- you might find some clear water. If you are lucky enough to find clear water you might get some dolphin to 20 pounds and also a few small wahoo. I did get reports of some sailfish out of the St. Lucie Inlet in about the same depth. Most of the fish were caught on trolled ballyhoo because live baits have been hard to find unless you use mullet which has been plentiful along the beaches. The has been quite a few bluefish and spanish mackerel along the beaches.
