Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

January 20, 2005
INSHORE - Even with all the sun we have had the cold temperatures and high winds are keeping anglers away from the boat ramps. Only one truck was at the Black Pearl Ramp on Monday and none there on Tuesday.
Over the weekend there were a good number of fish being reported like the steady trout bite from around the Harbor Branch and Round Island area to the North in the river. To the South the bite has been around Big Mud and Little Mud Creeks and the area just north of the Jensen Beach Causeway. Remember, with the colder water temperatures you will need to fish a little deeper and a lot slower. I did get a phone call from Jeff Pfeiffer stating that on a recent trip to Round Island he caught an 8 pound 12 ounce trout. He was using a large live shrimp and fishing around 8:30am.
The catch and release snook action has been around the local bridges on the out going tide and also in the Turning Basin in Ft. Pierce. Most of the fish reported were caught after dark and on live baits although a Red Tail Hawk and a Flair Hawk have been getting their share of the action.
The bridges along the Treasure Coast have been holding a good number of sand perch, snapper, sheepshead and a few black drum. Live shrimp have been the bait of choice for these fish.
I did get reports of scattered pompano, spanish mackerel and bluefish all along the Intercoastal.
TEEN ANGLERS - The monthly inshore tournament for the local chapter of the Teen Anglers will be this Sunday at Jaycee Park in Ft. Pierce. There is a mandatory meeting at 7:00am and then the teens will fish from 8:00am until 1:00pm. They will be awarded trophies and tackle for their efforts.
OFFSHORE - There is not much to report about the offshore action due to all the wind and 6 to 10 foot seas. But, before the winds started the bottom fishing for snapper and grouper along the Offshore Bar in 90 feet of water was good. Also, the bottom fishing along the Six Mile Reef had remained steady for snapper and grouper.
The sailfish bite was a little slow to the north of the Ft. Pierce Inlet but I di get reports of a few dolphin and 2 wahoo. Out of the St. Lucie Inlet the boats that ran to the South and fished in about 250 feet of water also reported some sailfish and dolphin.
