Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

January 28, 2005
INSHORE - With the winds and the cold temperatures letting up some after Tuesday the fishing has picked up starting with the trout. There has been plenty of action from fish in the 1 to 3 pound range while fishing in 3 to 5 feet of water. The best action this week has been coming from the Midway Road area south to the Jensen Beach Causeway on the West side of the river. Anglers using a D.O.A. Glow Shrimp fished slow are having the most luck. But, a live shrimp on a free line has also been good. I got an e-mail from Rich Bush of Palm City stating that on last Thursday he was fishing just south of Harbor Branch in Ft. Pierce and on the West side of the river and hooked 5 trout, one was a 25 inch gator trout, one 19 inch redfish and one 15 inch flounder. All of his fish were caught on live shrimp. I did get a food number of reports of redfish around the docks of St. Lucie Village and around the Queen's Cove area. Try using a gold spoon and fish as shallow as you can.
The catch and release snook action has been off and on with the best bite being on the incoming tide and around the North Bridge in Ft. Pierce. Try using a pinfish and fish it around the fenders of the bridge. There have been plenty of small snook up on the flats and they have been hitting just about anything you throw at them. Just a reminder -- snook seasons opens on February 1st.
The sheepshead are making a strong showing with good catches reported coming from just about any kind of structure you can find. Some of the hot spots have been the area's bridges, the channel markers along the Intercoastal and around the spoil islands. Use a small live shrimp or a fiddler crab. Also, the inshore grouper bite has been good along the channel edges to the north of the North Bridge in Ft. Pierce.
TEEN ANGLERS - Last Sunday's inshore tournament has been rescheduled for this Saturday -- January 29th and 6:45am at Jaycee Park. There is a mandatory meeting before the tournament. You can get more information on Teen Anglers on their website at www.teenanglers.com
OFFSHORE - The offshore fishing has been tough because of the weather conditions over the weekend but after Wednesday the seas started to calm and the fish started to bite.
There has been plenty of bottom fishing reports starting with the sheepshead, weakfish and grunts in 15 to 30 feet of water. On Saturday while visiting here from Haines City, Florida Ed & Emily Hendricks caught their limit of sheepshead from 1 to 3 pounds a limit of weakfish and some nice sized grunts. They were fishing just north of the Ft. Pierce Inlet in 22 feet of water and using live shrimp. The snapper and grouper bite has also been good in 70 to 105 feet of water just north of the Ft. Pierce Inlet and along the Six Mile Reef out of the St. Lucie Inlet.
The kingfish have been scattered in 70 to 85 feet of water along with plenty of bonita and cuda's. I did get reports of a couple of nice wahoo being caught to the south of the St. Lucie Inlet in 105 feet of water on a rigged mullet.
As far as the sailfish bite goes some of the boats have been lucky while fishing up and won the Treasure Coast in 100 to 170 feet of water while other boats have found nothing. Hopefully the bite will pick up as the weather gets better.
