Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

February 18, 2005
INSHORE - As the water temps start to warm up some of the fishing will get better. The snook bite has already improved over the last week with the best reports coming from the area bridges after dark and for the anglers who have been using live pinfish or a live jumbo shrimp. Most of the daytime snook were being caught around the area's Inlets on the outgoing tides again on live pinfish that was fished on the bottom.
The trout action remains steady all along the Treasure Coast. The best action has been in 3 to 5 feet of water and free lining a live shrimp. Still a few nice redfish being caught around the docks to the south of the South Bridge in Ft. Pierce. Try using a D.O.A. glow shrimp.
Bottom fishing for sheepshead, sandperch, croakers and black drum has been red hot around the North & South Bridges in Ft. Pierce, the Roosevelt Bridge in Stuart as well as the Palm City Bridge. A piece of fresh dead shrimp has been the bait of choice.
TEEN ANGLERS - The regularly scheduled inshore fishing tournament for the local chapter of Teen Anglers will be this Sunday, Feb. 20, at Jaycee Park in Ft. Pierce. The teen's will fish from 7:00am until Noon and will be awarded trophies and prizes for the efforts. For more info on Teen Anglers go to the website at www.teenanglers.com
OFFSHORE - I had good reports of dolphin in 150 to 200 feet of water. Also, good tuna action reported in the same area for both black and yellow fins.
I did get a few reports of cobia being caught by anglers who were bottom fishing -- which has been good in 90 to 140 feet of water. I got reports of grouper to 30 pounds and a lot of snapper in the 5 to 8 pound range. Live pinfish for the grouper and cigar minnows for the snapper has been the way to go. There has been plenty of bonita and small sharks everywhere.
I am still getting reports of sailfish in around 100 feet of water out of the St. Lucie Inlet and a lot of spanish mackerel in 15 to 30 feet of water.
Along the beaches the bottom fishing has been good for fish like sheepshead, porgy's and sea bass. These fish have been taking live shrimp.
