Fishing Report for Ft. Pierce, Florida

Capt. Joe Ward
April 14, 2005
Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

APRIL 14, 2005

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY - The first part of the week was good with a lot of trout, ladyfish and jack being reported around the Moorings. The snook action has been picking up around the flats and a few nice redfish were reported in shallow water. Offshore went down hill as the week ends with the high seas keeping most anglers at home. Before the blow started the bottom fishing was good in 70 to 80 feet of water for snapper and grouper.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY - The snook action remains good around the Ft. Pierce Inlet, Turning Basin and at the local bridges. There are still plenty of trout from Bear Point south to Herman's Bay. Along the channel edges there are a lot of snapper, sand perch and a few nice flounder. Offshore before Wednesday there were some kingfish in 50 to 60 feet of water. A few cobia reported in 70 feet and a few small dolphin reported in 240 feet of water. Bottom fishing was also good for snapper, grouper and sea bass in 90 to 125 feet of water.

MARTIN COUNTY - There has been a lot of snook being reported around all the area bridges and in the St. Lucie Inlet. Most of the action has been after dark. There are still some trout being reported on the flats to the north of the Jensen Beach Causeway in the afternoon. Croakers, black drum and sheepshead are keeping anglers busy around the bridges. Again, the offshore bite has been steady the first part of the week with the bottom fishing being the best. Reports of dolphin, kingfish and a few sails were reported to the south of the St. Lucie Inlet.

TEEN ANGLERS - The last regular inshore fishing tournament of the school year was held on Sunday, April 10th at Jaycee Park in Ft. Pierce. The teens had a hard time catching fish. The only middle school student to weigh a fish was Luis Hernandez of Northport Middle School. His trout got him a 1st place trophy, t shirt, cap and fishing gear. In the high school division 1st place went to Alex Shaffer of Lincoln Park Academy for a 5 pound 3 ounce flounder. Alex also got the biggest fish trophy as well as all the other goodies. 2nd place went to Kevin Su of Ft. Pierce Central and 3rd place was Chad Painter of Westwood High School. The championship tournament will be held on May 1st at Jaycee Park with the top 5 middle and high school students trying for the Teen Angler of the Year bragging rights.
