Fishing Report for Ft. Pierce, Florida

Capt. Joe Ward
July 7, 2005
Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

JULY 8, 2005

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY - Inshore the trout bite has been good for anglers fishing with top water baits or live pigfish. Try using the top water baits from daylight until about 8:30am then switch over to pigfish. There have been good reports of snapper along the channel edges. Try using a small live shrimp. The tarpon have remained at the Moorings and are still being very finicky about what they will eat. The catch and release snook action has been good around the Sebastian Inlet.

Offshore the bottom fishing around Bethel Shoals has been good with snapper to 10 pounds and grouper to 30 pounds. There has been a good number of cobia caught in that same area. Look for the kings in 60 to 90 feet of water and have been taking live baits. There has been a lot of tarpon on the beaches as well as big jacks.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY - Inshore there is still a good number of tarpon at Big Mud Creek but once again they have been very picky about what they are eating. The trout have also been picky unless you are using a live pigfish or a top water bait. Try and fins some clear water and use the top water bait until the morning heats up then switch to a live pigfish. Most of the trout this past week have been 5 pounds or under. The catch and release snook action has been really good up in Taylor Creek. The snapper bite along the channel edges continues to improve each day. Most of the fish are in the 1 to 2 pound range and are taking live shrimp.

Offshore the dolphin have been scattered in 120 to 160 feet of water with most of the fish caught under 20 pounds. The kingfish have been plentiful in 60 to 90 feet and anglers have been getting a good number of cobia from that same area. Several sailfish releases were reported last week from anglers fishing to the south of the Ft. Pierce Inlet in 120 to 160 feet of water. The bottom fishing for snapper, grouper and sea bass has been red hot around the Northeast Grounds.

MARTIN COUNTY - With all the dirty water the fishing has been hard but some anglers reported good trout action around the Jensen Beach Causeway. The area bridges are producing some snook for catch and release action. Also try the bridges for snapper, sandperch and black drum.

Offshore the best bottom fishing has been along the Six and Eight Mile Reefs. There has been a lot of sea bass, snapper, grouper and a few cobia. There has been kingfish in the same area. There is still a lot of sailfish being reported. Also a few tarpon up on the beaches out of the St. Lucie Inlet.

OKEECHOBEE COUNTY - With a lot of water in the lake the fishing has been good. The bass have been hitting on live shiners or spinner baits. The bream fishing has been good around the Rim Canal. The catfish action has been good at the Lake.
