Fishing Report for Ft. Pierce, Florida

Capt. Joe Ward
December 21, 2005
Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

DECEMBER 22, 2005

INSHORE - Even with snook season closed the action for catch and release has been good around the docks along the Ft. Pierce Inlet and around the North Bridge at night. The trout season opens on January 1st so you can look forward to some good action in 3 to 5 feet of water -- just off the edge of the flats. If the water temps drop you will need to fish deeper and slower. Plenty of croakers around the Faber Cove area. The trick is just sit on the schools until they decide to feed. When they do you can load up a cooler. Lots of jacks, spanish mackerel and a few bluefish working the Inlet and the Turning Basin. There has been a good black drum bite around the local bridges.

OFFSHORE - The best news is that the sailfish and dolphin bite has been good all week for the bigger boats fighting the sea conditions. Try going straight out the Ft. Pierce Inlet and start fishing in 100 feet of water and work your way out. The dolphin that were reported were scattered in the same area and most were under 20 pounds. The bottom fishing for snapper and grouper on the deeper reefs and wrecks to the northeast of the Ft. Pierce Inlet has been steady. The snapper have been 4 to 7 pounds and the grouper have all been around 12 to 18 pounds. There is plenty of spanish mackerel, weakfish and pompano along the beaches.

TEEN ANGLERS - The local chapter of Teen Anglers held their monthly inshore tournament on December 11th at Jaycee Park in Ft. Pierce. In the middle school division -- 1st place went to Anthony Graham, 2nd - Wendell Buckle, both of Northport Middle School and 3rd - Tyler Serio of Lincoln Park Academy. In the high school division -- 1st place went to Alex Shaffer of Lincoln Park Academy, 2nd - Kevin Su of Ft. Pierce Central and 3rd - Chad Painter of Westwood High School. Biggest fish of the tournament went to Anthony Graham for his 4.7 pound black drum. The next inshore tournament will be January 8th at Jaycee Park in Ft. Pierce.
