Fishing Report for Ft. Pierce, Florida

Capt. Joe Ward
January 12, 2006
Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

January 12, 2006

INSHORE - The action has been up and down mostly depending on the weather. The trout action has been steady in 3 to 5 feet of water during the mid morning and after the water has warmed up some. Soft plastic baits fished slow are hard to beat right now. There has been good catch and release snook action reported at night around the local bridges in Ft. Pierce and in the Turning Basin for the anglers who are throwing jigs. Bottom fishing remains steady for sandperch, croakers, sheepshead and black drum when fishing around the bridges and along the channel edges. The spanish mackerel and bluefish are scattered all over the river -- just try slow trolling a small spoon around the Inlet area or up and down the Intercoastal. I did get a few reports of pompano up on the flats to the south of the power lines. The pompano were taking small live shrimp or sand fleas.

OFFSHORE - The word offshore is sailfish but some anglers are having a hard time getting out of the dolphin to look for the sails -- now that's a problem to have. The reports are that the sails and dolphin are in as close as 60 feet and out as deep as 200 feet of water. Most of the fish have been caught to the south of the Ft. Pierce Inlet. The kingfish bite has been fair around the Northeast grounds. The bottom fishing over the patch reefs has been good when the sea conditions permitted it. Weakfish, sheepshead and snapper have all been very active. Along the beaches just look for the schools of spanish mackerel with some pompano and bluefish mixed in.

TEEN ANGLERS - The monthly inshore tournament that was scheduled for January 8th was rescheduled for this Sunday, January 15th. The tournament will be held at Jaycee Park in Ft. Pierce. If you would like to volunteer your time and boat just go to the web at www.teenanglers.org
