Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

January 26, 2006
INSHORE - The inshore fishing has been a little on the slow side for most anglers but, there are still some fish around. The trout have been in 3 to 5 feet of water along the edge of the flats and have been feeding on live shrimp or on a green or rootbeer colored soft plastic bait. The redfish reports are that the fish have been concentrated around the docks at St. Lucie Village. Again, try a live shrimp or a gold spoon. The local bridges in Ft. Pierce have been holding some sandperch, black drum, sheepshead and croakers. Still some pompano being caught to the south of Harbor Branch. The catch and release snook action remains steady at night for anglers throwing feathers. Just a reminder -- snook season reopens on February 1st.
OFFSHORE - The offshore fishing has been tough with only a few days of good weather to fish before the next front moves in. Scattered dolphin and sailfish have been to the south of the Ft. Pierce Inlet in 100 to 160 feet of water. Look for the kings in 60 to 90 feet of water and they have been taking live baits. I did have a few reports of big cobia being spotted but it was hard to get them to eat. The bottom fishing has picked up for snapper and grouper over the reefs and wrecks. Both live and frozen baits have been works well. The spanish mackerel, bluefish, weakfish and pompano are scattered up along the beaches in 15 to 30 feet of water.
BRAGGING BOARD - Richard and Trae Sorensen caught 3 dolphin in about 250 feet of water last weekend and they were using ballyhoo. Wayne Wilson caught a 4.6 pound black drum while fishing from a local dock. Wally Dressel and Larry Reid have been catching a good number of sandperch each day. They have been using dead shrimp cut into small pieces.
TEEN ANGLERS - The next monthly inshore fishing tournament for the local chapter of Teen Anglers will be held on February 5th at Jaycee Park in Ft. Pierce. The teen's will fish from 6:45am until noon and then will have a weigh in. If you would like more info on Teen Anglers just go to the website at www.teenanglers.org
