Fishing Report for Ft. Pierce, Florida

Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

February 3, 2006

INSHORE - All the talk this week has been about the opening of snook season with good reports coming from most of the anglers. There has been a lot of short fish reported in the Turning Basin taking live shrimp and also a few fish over the 34" slot limit and these fish were taking a Flair Hawk or live baits. The North Bridge in Ft. Pierce has had the best reports of slot size snook and they were feeding on live shrimp at the tide changes. The trout fishing is good when the wind slows down. Most of the trout have been schoolie size and are in 3 to 5 feet of water. Live shrimp fished under a popping cork has fooled the most fish. Still a few redfish around the mangroves but they have been easy to spook. I have been getting reports of some nice catches of pompano around the Harbor Branch area to the North and by the power lines to the South. Try using a sandflea or a Nylor jig. The weakfish and croakers are schooled up but not wanting to eat very often. If you find the schools you have to sit on them and be patient -- they will bite sooner or later. The Sandpit or Drum Hole would be a good place to start.

OFFSHORE - Not much to talk about this week due to the sea conditions. Wednesday and Thursday were about the only nice days. Look for scattered dolphin and sailfish in 100 to 150 feet of water. A few bottom fish like snapper, grouper and sea bass were reported over the reefs and wrecks from 30 to 180 feet of water. I did have a few reports of cobia in the 40 pound range. They were caught around the 12-A Buoy area. There are still plenty of spanish mackerel, bluefish, weakfish and pompano along the beaches.

TEEN ANGLERS - The next scheduled inshore tournament for the local chapter of Teen Anglers is this Sunday at Jaycee Park in Ft. Pierce. The teens will fish from 6:45am until noon. The top three students in the middle and high school divisions will receive trophies and fishing gear for their efforts. For more info on Teen Anglers just go to the web at www.teenanglers.org
