Fort Pierce - Saltwater Fishing Report

February 16, 2006
INSHORE - With the water temp's still cold most of the reports are about fish coming from the deeper water and not so many from the flats -- except for the redfish which have been active around the Queen's Cove area on the high tide and along the docks of Indian River Drive. The snook action around the Turning Basin and the local bridges in Ft. Pierce has been steady but nothing to write home about. I have been getting reports of more over the slot size fish than keepers. There has been a good number of snook reported that were just short of the legal slot too. Large live shrimp, pinfish or a Flair Hawk have been the best baits to use. Around the bridges the sheepshead and black drum have been feeding on live shrimp. The sandperch bite has been good all over but the croaker and weakfish are here but not eating very much.
OFFSHORE - The ocean is still not pretty but the bigger boats are reporting scattered action while trolling but nothing steady. The reports were that there was a handful of dolphin in 150 feet of water and some kings in 60 to 90 feet of water. The bottom fishing for snapper and grouper has been OK on the reefs and wrecks but, the Northeast grounds has been the best place. Try using frozen cigar minnows as live bait has been hard to find. Along the beaches there has been plenty of action with sheepshead, croakers and a few pompano keeping anglers busy. And, if you look for the birds you should fins plenty of spanish mackerel and bluefish.
